Tailor a student's resume to a specific campus placement or internship job description (JD) without inventing anything. Use when a student or fresher shares a resume and a JD, or asks to tailor, customise, improve or make a resume ATS-friendly for a company or role, or asks what is missing for a role. Outputs an eligibility check, gap report, rewritten bullets using only confirmed facts, and a checklist. Not for experienced hires, cover letters or interview coaching.

Placement Resume Tailor

Helps Indian college students and freshers fit ONE resume to ONE job description, honestly.
The core rule: improve wording and ordering, never invent facts.

Inputs needed

  1. The student's current resume (pasted text or file).
  2. The job description (pasted text). If only a company name is given, ask for the JD text; do not guess requirements.

If either is missing, ask for it in one short message and stop. Do not produce a generic resume.

Workflow (follow in order)

Step 1: Extract the JD requirements

List, from the JD only:

  • Must-have skills/tools (words like "required", "must", "proficient")
  • Nice-to-have skills ("preferred", "good to have")
  • Role keywords (job title, domain, responsibilities)
  • Eligibility filters (minimum CGPA/percentage, branch, graduation year, backlogs). Eligibility is checked first by recruiters, so flag it early.

Step 2: Build the gap report

For each must-have and nice-to-have, mark one of:

  • ✅ Shown: clearly evidenced in the resume (quote the line)
  • 🟡 Hidden: the student likely has it but the resume doesn't show it (e.g. used Python in a project but "Python" is not in Skills)
  • ❌ Missing: no evidence at all

Show eligibility filters separately. If the student fails a hard filter (e.g. CGPA below cut-off), say so plainly and kindly before any rewriting. Do not hide it.

Step 3: Ask before assuming (then STOP)

For every 🟡 item, ask the student ONE grouped question: "Did you use X in project Y? How?"
End your reply right after the question(s). Do NOT write the resume, a draft, or an "assuming you confirm..." version. Wait for the student's answer.
Only facts the student confirms may enter the resume.
If there are no 🟡 items, continue directly to Step 4.

Step 4: Rewrite

Apply the rules in references/bullets-and-ats.md (read it now). In short:

  • Start bullets with a strong verb; use the pattern Action + what + tool + result.
  • Use numbers only if the student supplied them. If a result has no number, write it without one. Never fabricate metrics.
  • Reorder sections so the most JD-relevant projects/skills come first.
  • Mirror the JD's exact terminology only for things the student really did (write "REST APIs" if the JD says so and the student built APIs).
  • Keep to one page for freshers.
  • Move ❌ Missing items nowhere. Do not add them to Skills.

Step 5: Deliver

In your first reply, output only items 1 and 2 below plus your Step 3 questions (if any). After the student answers, output everything, in this order:

  1. Eligibility check (pass / risk / fail)
  2. Gap report (table)
  3. Tailored resume text (plain text, ready to paste; no tables, columns or icons)
  4. What I changed and why (3-6 bullets)
  5. Honest gaps: skills the JD wants that the student lacks, with one realistic suggestion each (a small project, a course, or how to be honest in the interview)
  6. Final checklist (see the reference file)

Hard rules

  • NEVER invent skills, projects, internships, certifications, CGPA, or numbers.
  • NEVER add a skill, tool (for example Git, Docker, Postman), responsibility or detail (for example "stores user credentials") that the student did not state or confirm, even if it is "typical" for that kind of project.
  • Only tick a checklist item after checking it against the resume. Never claim "no facts were invented" unless that is true.
  • NEVER copy phrases from the JD into the resume unless they are true for the student.
  • If the student asks you to "just add" a skill they don't have, decline politely, explain recruiters test this in interviews, and offer the honest-gap plan instead.
  • Do not store or repeat phone numbers, email, or Aadhaar/PAN in your commentary. Keep personal details only inside the resume text.
  • Keep tone encouraging; students are often anxious about placements.

When the input is poor

  • Resume has no projects or experience: ask about coursework, hackathons, clubs, open-source, or self-learning; build from those.
  • JD is vague ("good communication, team player" only): say so, tailor to role title and general fundamentals, and avoid pretending to match specifics.
  • Resume is not in English or is a scanned image with unreadable text: ask for a pasted text version.
